Never Blood Outdoors!

Updated: Dec 5, 2024

Black and white cartoon image of hunched monsters creeping across a forest path.

"Due to climate change, storms get worse. Fire, tsunamis, mudslides, hurricanes, drought, and tornadoes extinguish half of the population. Earthquakes grow in force. Mines split and sink into the earth and large crevices gouge scars all over the world. These mines and deep quarries tear into the bowels of the earth. Humans begin to disappear. Entire families, then towns, and cities are devoured by some unknown creature."

As a reader, my favourite genres are Fantasy, Dystopian, and Post-Apocalyptic. I want to be whisked, dragged, or thrown into a new world. I've spent three years writing my portal fantasy, Iggy's Voyage: The Unlikely Hero. It is time to begin a new long project.

I joined a new writing group in September called Realm Makers. It is an online forum created for authors writing clean Fantasy, Dystopia, Post-Apocalyptic, and Sci-Fi for all ages. There are too many exciting shows and movies centred on children have an R-Rating. Why would anyone create stories about children when children of the same age are not able to watch them? If they are not written for children, what adults want to watch children doing R-Rated things?

Realm Makers had an October writing challenge called RealmieWriMo. We set our intentions for writing a significant work of fiction. Then, share daily with our peers about our trials and hallelujahs. We also share bits of our stories, characters, and our daily world count/pages. It's been a fun and positive experience so far. I've chosen an idea that came to me in a dream this summer. The concept is in the italics above. This night of dreams I woke often and each time I did, I added bits and pieces to the story. By morning, I had a chapter to write. I am now bringing the full story onto the page for this writing challenge. The plan is a shorter, high-action family trope post-apocalyptic story written for tweens. The goal is around 20,000-25,000 words to interest children with shorter attention spans. I've called it Never Blood Outdoors! You can guess why it has that name. ;)

I'll keep you posted on this new manuscript as the weeks go on. I'm having a ton of fun writing it. It's keeping me sane through a difficult and humbling querying process.
