Okay, I am pretty sure that Flying Dimitri is the reason I learned to fly planes and why I'm obsessed with whales. I am a prairie girl in the middle of the continent and I have a bucket list of whale destinations to visit one day. I pretty much only have whale destinations on my bucket list.
There is something strange about this book and the dark and moody illustrations often pop in my head sporadically. There isn't even much to the story but I couldn't get enough of it when I was a kid. When I've read it as an adult I often wonder what snagged me with this one? I think it must be it's dreamy quality. I have always been a dreamer and this book planted me into Dimitri's dream and I woke up confused like with most dreams. Confusion is great for a creative mind. I could fill in the gaps of my knowledge with whatever the heck I wanted.
It looks like they updated the illustrations with a newer pressing and it makes me a little sad. You know how when someone whispers your ears perk up and you lean in so you don't miss a word? Well, when the illustrations are darker, you need to spend more time to take in the visuals. I spent a lot of time inspecting every spot on the page.
